Introducing Jana and Acupuncture
  • My name is Jana Hough. I am a qualified Acupuncturist and is currently studying for my Masters degree specialising in Chinese herbs. I already hold a diploma to enable me to prescribe patent herbs. I am a member of the British Acupuncture Council and observe a code of practice, which lays down stringent standards of hygiene and sterilisation.  I only use very thin disposable needles for your safety. I am fully insured.
  • I have been working within acupuncture for over three years and am skilled in treating a wide range of conditions ranging from musculo-skeletal to paediatric and facial acupuncture. Alongside acupuncture, I occasionally use massage and some energy healing to enhance the effects of the acupuncture treatment. My aim is not to simply provide you with an acupuncture treatment, but also enhance your self-awareness about your body. By doing so, it allows you to take control over your own health rather than feel that you have to be dependent on others to heal you. We will need to work together as a team to achieve the optimum result. Healing lies within your hands. By helping you realise this and empowering you, I believe that you will never view your health in the same light again.
  • Your first consultation may be longer than subsequent sessions. I need to assess your general state of health, in order to identify the underlying pattern of disharmony to give you the most effective treatment. You will be asked about your current symptoms and what treatment you have received so far, your medical history and that of your close family, your diet, digestive system, sleeping patterns and emotional state. To discover how the energies are flowing in your body; I am likely to feel your pulses on both wrists noting their quality, rhythm and strength. The structure, colour and coating of your tongue also give a good guide to your physical health.
  • Once enough information has been gathered to determine the likely causes of your problems, I can select the most appropriate treatment. The aim is to discover which energy channels need adjusting for your specific complaint to improve, and which require treatment to boost your overall energy and vitality.
  • There are around 500 recognised acupuncture points on the body, of which about 100 are commonly used. Stimulation of specific areas on the skin affects the functioning of certain organs in the body. However, those areas may not be close to the part of the body where the problem is experienced. For example, although you may suffer from headaches, needles may be inserted in your foot or hand.
  • I may supplement the needle treatment with moxa, a smouldering herb that is used to warm acupuncture points to encourage the body’s energy to flow smoothly. Other methods of stimulating acupuncture points include using lasers or electro-acupuncture. Massage or tapping with a rounded probe are techniques particularly suitable for small children or for people with a fear of needles
  • In traditional acupuncture philosophy, each person is considered as unique, and therefore the number of treatments required depends on the individual. Some change is usually felt after 5 treatments. Normally, you are recommended to visit your acupuncturist once or twice a week at first, although some conditions may need less frequent attention. Sometimes the effects of the treatment are dramatic, and only one or two treatments are required. With other patients the effects are subtler and they may need treatment over several months.
  • I  charge £30 for a daytime session and £35 in the evening.  If I do an assessment and we decide that acupuncture might not be the best treatment for your problem, there is no charge for the assessment interview, only for costs incurred. I provide home visits.
